Matthew Wood Psychotherapy and Counselling

Who I Am

I am Matthew Wood (he/ him). I am a psychotherapist accredited by the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapists. On this page I’ll tell you something about my background and how this has influenced my therapeutic approach.

Over seven years of training I have gained clinical qualifications including an MSc in Integrative Psychotherapy from the Metanoia Institute and a Certificate in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy from Birkbeck, University of London.

I have been offering psychotherapy and counselling to individual adults for over five years. My caseload has been diverse: At Waterloo Community Counselling and the Metanoia Counselling and Psychotherapy Service I have worked with clients with diverse lived experiences, representing a wide and intersectional range of identities, including differences in age, gender, sexuality, and cultural background. At Community and Projects Ealing I provided therapeutic support to individuals who have been given psychiatric diagnoses including ADHD, PTSD, OCD and paranoid schizophrenia. As a disabled person I appreciate how belonging to a marginalized group can negatively impact well-being. My own lived experience as a person with a disability informs my belief that our identity structures our experience of the world and ourselves.

Before training as a psychotherapist my degree-level education in literature and philosophy was an invitation to reflect on the nature of human experience. Then, working for many years as an engineer and manager in the online department of a large media organisation, I gained extensive experience in coaching and mentoring others to reach their professional and personal goals.

These paths have converged in my approach to my clinical work today. I believe the process of establishing a shared understanding of my client’s lived experience and inner world can facilitate deep personal change and development.
